China Social Club is Frau and PCJ. China Social Club is a music and creative platform based in Shanghai. When not digging for eccentric dance records, the pair are throwing parties and collaborating on projects in China and overseas. China Social Club curates the NTS Radio Live from Shanghai broadcast. They also have a monthly show with NTS Radio. For their club set, expect an energetic mix of house, disco, broken beats and acid.
Frau (Matt Hildebrandt) is a vinyl DJ and selector who is known for his varied sets, mixing together different genres with very little reliance on effects and tricks, instead valuing selection and sequencing, settling into a solid groove or switching up the vibe with each track. His selections span disco, house, techno, breaks, progressive and rave, building his sets with focus on basslines early and switching up rhythms heading later into the night.
Originally from Melbourne, he’s been in Shanghai for over 6 years holding down residencies and doing events all around town, keeping it fresh with new finds and an ever expanding record collection. FRAU started up promotion house and club night, China Social Club in China with compatriot, PCJ. He also opened Shanghai nightspot, Smash. Frau is the curator of NTS Radio London’s LIve from Shanghai series, which is a monthly radio broadcast featuring China’s finest DJs, producers and crews. www.nts.live/shows/shanghai. Frau also has a monthly set on NTS under the name CHINA SOCIAL CLUB. His set up is 2x Technics 1200/1210 turntables, 2x Pioneer CDJs and a professional 4 channel DJ mixer.
PCJ (Phillip Caspar James) found himself throwing down records at house parties in Perth, Australia in 2005. Shortly after he relocated deep within the bar and club scene while opening up his backyard and friend’s warehouses to hundreds of feet. He is currently co-founder of CHINA SOCIAL CLUB, a music, culture and events company based out of Shanghai. He also co-hosts the Live from Shanghai radio series which broadcasts on NTS Radio
PCJ has performed at club, festival and corporate events alongside the names of Daft Punk, The Gorillaz, Todd Terje, Theo Parrish, De la Soul, Tame Impala, Peggy Gou, San Soda, Francis Inferno Orchestra, Dam Funk, Joakim, Sebastian & Kavinsky, Tuxedo, DJ Harvey, Little Dragon, The Presets, Cut Copy, Hugo Gerani and more. His sound is highly influenced by 70/80s disco, boogie and pop. His sets vary from balearic afternoon soft rock to high energy house and leftfield disco, also not to forget his love for the classics. His style can be categorised as left field disco, groove, house, italo, techno and balearic.
