(October 4, 2016 – Denpasar, Bali) – The Mangrooves, a local Bali-based reggae and ska band is no longer a stranger to the Indonesian music scene, receiving two nominations for their debut EP release titled “Live EP” from the prestigious AMI (“AnugerahMusik Indonesia”) Indonesian music awards, held on September 28 at Econvention, Ancol, Jakarta:
● “Best Reggae/Ska/Rocksteady Single” for their debut single “All in Your Mind”;
● “Best Album Design” designed by UK artist, Marina Renee Cemmick.
The Mangrooves celebrated their astonishing double-nomination as the only indie band in the 2016 AMI Awards with English lyrics, amongst huge name acts in the Indonesian music scene who were also nominated, including IwanFals, Slank, Raisa, Afgan, Jamrud, Noah and Barasuara. Formalized in 1997, the AMI Awards have been described by local media publications as ‘The Grammy’s of Indonesia’.
Recently signed to Jakarta-based label Demajors, the band released their debut five-track EP, titled “Live EP“, on June 5, 2016, originally recorded during a live concert performance in November 2015.
The Mangrooves are a young, up and coming, culturally diverse group, homegrown from the island of the gods, Bali. This five-piece band, formed in late 2013, over their dissatisfaction of the stereotypes within the reggae music scene in Indonesia, along with their love of music and cultures, bring together a new blend of reggae, dub, and rock, layered with heavy hooks, rhythms, and conscious lyrics with electronic samples. The result is a unique and honest music that comes from each member’s cultural and stylistic backgrounds.
The “Live EP” album cover was inspired by the official national motto of Indonesia, “Bhineka Tunggal Ika”, meaning “unity in diversity”, and reflects unity between people of different cultures, as well as between humans and our natural environment.
The Mangrooves are following up their AMI double-nomination with an upcoming mini tour of Lombok and Jakarta in November (concert dates forthcoming).
The AMI-nominated single “All In Your Mind” can be listened to on The Mangroovesofficial Youtube channel or their EP, available physically in music stores throughout Indonesia or soon digitally on iTunes, Spotify, and Deezer in late October 2016.
